That’s why we’re writing this blog to inform you that you should have a professional inspect and even replace your water heater before April of the new year.
Why? Because the Department of Energy has announced that new standards for energy efficiency will be going into effect as of April 2015. This means that certain water heaters, especially ones that are between 6 and 10 years old, are going to be rendered obsolete. It’s certainly a good thing to conserve energy, and here at Outstanding we are always advising people to invest in the highest efficiency devices for their homes — that way, you can sustain a smaller carbon footprint and save money on utilities month over month. That’s part of the reason we’re such huge advocates of Oil to Gas Conversion!
However, the new energy efficiency laws also mean that you won’t be able to get a replacement as easily as you once could have. In fact, if your water heater doesn’t meet energy efficiency standards, you may not be able to get a replacement even if you are under warranty! What’s perhaps even more of the nuisance is the fact that you might need to have your gas line resized or your utility room space converted. This is because newer water heater models will require insulation, making the machine larger. It may not fit into the formerly designated space. These new regulations go into effect for residential water heaters in April of 2015.
So this year, consider your options. You can either:
- Wait for the new year to come, then get a more expensive replacement for your water heater should it suffer any damage.
- Get a water heater replacement now so that you don’t have to upgrade for another 8 to 12 years.
- Make the switch to higher efficiency water heating now via tankless, which is a significantly smaller machine and can be installed on nearly any wall.
